Vihtori Luhtanen besloot in 1907 zijn eigen bedrijf te starten. Zijn vrouw ontwierp en naaide terwijl Vihtori verantwoordelijk was voor de verkoop. De bouw van de eerste industriële naaiatelier werd in 1928 voltooid op de oude bedrijfslocatie vlakbij het treinstation in Lahti.

In de jaren zestig had Luhta een enorm succes als merknaam in Finland en bood het een baanbrekende collectie aan. Luhta drong begin jaren zeventig door op de internationale markten. Het unieke ontwerp van Luhta was precies goed voor de modetrends van de dag. Comfortabel en functioneel op een sportieve dag, tijdens een wandeling of op het water. Maar ook zeer geschikt voor dagelijks gebruik dankzij de modieuze uitstraling.
